Severe weather may affect journeys across the Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink networks today and on Sunday 28 April

Forecasted severe weather means train running across Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern networks may be delayed.

Disruption is expected from Saturday evening until approximately 12:00 on Sunday 28 April.

Customer advice:

Heavy rainfall is expected on the South Coast, affecting Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services in this area. Some strong winds are also expected.

This may affect journeys from this evening, 27 April, until the middle of the day tomorrow, Sunday 28 April. Please check journey planners before you travel.

You will be updated here with information about any incidents which do occur.

Planning your journey:

You can check train departures from your station here:

You can view live maps of the network here:

Can you tell me more about this?

Spells of intense rainfall will be affecting the network, as well as strong winds. Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink are doing everything they can to keep trains moving, but need to advise you that your journey could be affected. If there are any further details, we'll update you on this page.

Heavy rain can cause a number of problems for railway infrastructure. If floods occur and the water is fast-moving, it can dislodge the ballast which supports the track. Ballast is the term we use for the small granite stones which you see under the rails. As ballast is used to ensure the railway track has a stable base, it's important that it's in a safe condition.

There are also potential issues for the electric third rail which powers many trains, as well as the signalling system.

To help reduce disruption caused by flooding, Network Rail work to ensure pumps and flood barriers are in place, and also jointly plan for the impact of severe weather. Control room staff monitor reports of excess water and ensure staff are sent to deal with this is as quickly as possible.

Strong winds cause a number of issues for the railway. Some routes are lined by huge numbers of trees, and although these are regularly assessed, even one tree can cause significant disruption when it falls onto the track. Specialist teams will need to attend and make sure it is removed, and that any other nearby trees have not been affected.

Debris can also be blown onto the line, often from surrounding properties. Neighbours are encouraged to make sure their property is safe and secure, so that it doesn't end up on the track, where it's likely to be damaged. Again, in these cases, staff will attend and make sure the railway is clear.

Speed restrictions may be put in place to allow drivers to stop in time, should there be obstructions on the railway. On routes with overhead wires, these may also be affected by high wind speeds. Your journey may be delayed, as this means the network has lower capacity, because trains take longer to travel along each section of track.

Lines reopened: Disruption through Norbury expected until 14:00

Lines have reopened following a trespass incident at Norbury. Whilst service recovers, trains running through this station may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

Disruption is expected to continue until 14:00.

Customer Advice

All lines have reopened following a trespass incident in the Norbury area earlier today.

Gatwick Express and Southern are working hard to get back to their timetables.

However, this has been disrupting trains which run on the routes between:

  • East Croydon, Clapham Junction and London Victoria
  • East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Watford Junction
  • East Croydon, Streatham and London Bridge
  • West Croydon, Clapham Junction and London Victoria

Southern and Gatwick Express services have been affected.

Your train may be running with a delay of up to 15-30 minutes, if it's already been in this area.

Delays to further trains on this part of the network are now reducing.

There may be a few cancellations, and some late-running trains may be revised. This means they may not stop at all of the usual stations, or they may terminate part of the way along their usual routes.

As a result, you may need to change trains to get to your destination.

We know this may mean your journey takes longer. However, it does allow Gatwick Express and Southern to get their trains and crews back to the right places for the rest of the day's timetable.

Gatwick Express and Southern will be keeping departure boards and station announcements up to date, so please keep an eye on the latest information when you're travelling. You can also see the next train from your station here.

Gatwick Express and Southern now recommend that you use your normal route. If you're already travelling on an alternative route which we'd advertised earlier, you'll be able to continue to your destination at no extra cost.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

A trespass incident was reported in the Norbury area, shortly after 11:30.

In this case, trains needed to stopped entirely, as it was not safe to run them past the person. Emergency services and Network Rail responders have now attended and removed the person. All lines reopened at approximately 12:05.

Trespassing on the railway is very dangerous. Trains run all day, every day - whether passenger trains, freight trains or specialist engineering work machines. It's not possible to be sure that you can hear when a train is coming, and in many cases, you won't see a train until it is very close to you.

In many areas, trains are powered by an electric third rail, which carries a dangerous electric current. There are also other electrical systems and cables, slippery surfaces, steep drops and other hazards.

Network Rail manage the railway infrastructure, and they're working hard to educate everyone about these dangers and prevent people from accessing the track. You can see their latest safety campaigns here.

As well as the dangers, trespassing on the railway is also illegal, and obstructing the railway can carry severe penalties.

ASLEF have also announced an overtime ban from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May. Southeastern expect to run their full timetable during this time, except for Tuesday 7 May which is their strike day.

Tuesday 7 May:

If you do travel, expect severe disruption, plan ahead and allow much more time for your journey.

If the strike action is cancelled at short-notice, it may not be possible to switch back to the full timetable immediately.

Check before you travel:

You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.

Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
