Feel Safe, Feel Secure when travelling with LNER

Trains, stations, car parks – there’s a lot we look after, and we do need your help to ensure everyone has a safe and comfortable journey.

Keep a close eye on things

At LNER it’s really important to us that all of our passengers feel safe and secure when travelling onboard our trains and in our stations.

That’s why we are supporting and promoting the British Transport Police Railway Guardian App.

The app is available across England, Scotland and Wales and will support our aim of ensuring a safe environment and journey for all our customers while travelling. You can even share your location with friends and family while you’re travelling and it gives you information you can trust, at your fingertips, all from one reliable place.

Here are some of the benefits:

Up to date advice

  • There’s lots of helpful information on how to travel safely, whether you’re a novice or a seasoned traveller.

Find the right help

  • Browse useful information on a range of topics like personal safety, health, and wellbeing.
  • You can also access lots of help from charities and agencies like Women’s Aid, Victim Support and Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

Report something odd

The app makes reporting easy and discrete. If you have any concerns about anything or anyone you encounter, you can text the British Transport Police direct or report crimes or concerns on their homepage. Remember if you see something, say something.

There is also guidance showing how you can intervene (if you feel confident to do so) if you witness inappropriate behaviours.

The app also allows you to get in touch with the Train Operating Company about things that might make you feel unsafe while travelling, like poor lighting in waiting rooms or car parks or any other unsafe areas. You can report vandalism or let them know of anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or at risk.

Reporting sexual harassment

We should all be free to travel where and when we like without feeling unsafe, violated, or intimidated #ZeroToleranceOnRail.

Here are a few tips below to help you take the right action and report sexual harassment on the railway or are aware of someone who is doing this and want to remain anonymous.

LNER always looking out for you

Download your Railway Guardian app here today.

We’re big fans of CCTV. All our stations and properties are covered and lots of it has been recently upgraded. Gone are the days of grainy old footage. We're capturing everything in HD. In addition, our staff are now often equipped by Body Worn Video cameras, so give us a smile!

Remember, you can help us too. Always keep all your luggage and personal belongings with you. Sadly, there are thieves out there, and while our cameras are watching, staff and the British Transport Police are ever-vigilant too, but pickpockets are always around to take advantage.

On busy platforms and trains your bag could be easily mistaken for someone else's, or if someone is in a rush, they can easily pick up your luggage instead of theirs. Why not customise your bag to make it stand out so it's easier to identify and you're able to keep it in sight?

It’s not just about your belongings. If you spot any luggage or any other item that appears to be unaccompanied, please report it immediately to train or station staff, or contact British Transport Police using the new Rail Guardian app mentioned earlier, or text on 61016. It doesn’t take a second.

It’s also worth checking the safety information on our trains before you travel.

See it. Say it. Sorted

Please remain vigilant. If you see anything suspicious, like someone being somewhere they shouldn't, strange behaviour or an unattended bag, if you witness a crime at one of our stations or on one of our trains, contact the British Transport Police immediately on the app, call 0800 40 50 40 or text on 61016. In an emergency, always call 999.

Behaviour on our trains and at our stations

A bit of anti-social behaviour can ruin a journey for the rest of us. There are certain types of behaviour that we don’t want to happen on our services. Again, you can report any of this using the app.

These include things like:

• Being drunk, disruptive or rowdy

• Using offensive language

• Playing music so loudly that it annoys other passengers

• Putting feet on seats

• Leaving trains or platforms in a mess. Please use bins or take it with you

• Taking up seats with luggage when it's busy. Check out our luggage tips.

Good to go?

We have to think about your safety and that of other passengers and our employees. That means we won’t allow anyone to board one of our trains if they appear to be ‘unfit to travel.’

You or a companion might be ‘unfit to travel’ if you’re:

• Unable to stand steadily without support

• Behaving aggressively

• Acting in a disorderly, indecent, or offensive way

• We don't normally do any more than ask you not to travel, but if a situation develops, the British Transport Police are there to back us up.

Banning orders

In some cases, a customer may be issued with a banning order. This means they’re not permitted on any LNER property. If they ignore the ban, they will be breaking the law.

Peace of mind

At LNER, we fully comply with the National Railway Security Programme, so there are lots of safety measures and plans in place for your protection. If you want to find out more, take a look here.

Security at our car parks

Our stations and car parks are safer than ever.

We’re proud to be part of the Secure Stations scheme, which encourages rail operators to increase security at their stations and take measures to reduce crime. The scheme is run by the Department for Transport and the British Transport Police.

LNER stations with Secure Stations status are:

• Berwick-upon-Tweed

• Darlington

• Doncaster

• Durham

• Grantham

• Newcastle

• Newark North Gate

• Peterborough

• Retford

• Wakefield Westgate

• York

We don't manage all the stations on our route, but thought you might like to know that the following stations also hold Secure Stations status:

• London King's Cross

• Edinburgh

• Leeds

All our car parks are also have the Park Mark – which means they’re part of the Safer Parking Scheme.

Feel safe, feel secure when travelling with LNER.
